![]() Never said deaf people aren't or couldn't be badass. And since it doesn’t seem likely the show will go in detail about how she was able to ascend the ranks and use her deafness as a strength, you don’t give a means to inspire real deaf/hard of hearing people, this is cheap representation and doing it just to say we have a deaf/hard of hearing character and diversity. Even if she can read lips exceptionally well, this doesn’t help in the fighting scenario I previously mentioned, she’s still at risk. And while she has overpowered some people like Rayla and some Sunfire elves, Janai was able to hold her own very well, so it’s not like she’s unmatched or unrivaled to the point of being super human. Yes she’s a good fighter, but that’s not enough. How she was able to ascent the ranks and earn her position seems questionable and, unfortunately, not within the realm of possibility. She wouldn’t be able to hear an impending attack or someone calling out to her in the middle of a battle, which puts her life on the line. She can’t issue orders without the need of a translator, which could put lives on the line. She’s tough and a badass, no doubt, but that deafness is going to be a huge liability. Toph didn’t let her handicap stop or impede her, and now, actual blind people have various resources at their disposal so they can do the same, this is great representation.Īmaya doesn’t have that skill, nor does she have any powers or magic to aid her. It makes Toph a great example of representation as, while earth bending obviously does not exist, advancements have been made in technology that allow blind or visually impaired people to live relatively normal lives with their use. This fits within the lore of their world, and she used her powers to be the most powerful earth bender in the world (sorry Bumi). When she was in the desert, she was helpless, but on solid ground, she was so adept and skilled that people around her forgot she was blind. Toph was blind, however, she was also an earth bender, and she trained herself to be able to sense vibrations and movement in the earth to be able to see. But the difference is that it works and fits in the realm of possibilities for Avatar. I know people like to compare her to Toph in Avatar, another Ehasz written show. A deaf/hard of hearing commander of an army, it does raise some problems and doesn’t fit within the suspension of disbelief criteria. No, if an anvil falls on someone in TDP, they’d be dead. Its not Looney Tunes where, if an anvil falls on someone, they’d come out with minor cuts and bruises. However, the show still follows certain real life expectations and laws. ![]() People growing wings because of a spell, yes, that makes sense in regards to their world. Now I know what you’re going to say, “It’s a fantasy show about dragons and elves, it’s not supposed to be realistic.” For certain things, yes, you are right, and because of the world in which they live in, there’s therefore a willingness we are able to suspend our disbelief. I have to kind of agree with the OP here, making Amaya deaf and putting her in the position she’s in doesn't make a whole lot of sense and is kind of unrealistic and a cheap form of representation.
